Rumble Strips Help Reduce Accident Deaths, Study Says

Rumble Strips Help Reduce Accident Deaths, Study Says

Safety officials in states across the nation are constantly exploring new ways to improve roadway safety. Among their many efforts, some state transportation divisions are implementing the use of rumble strips, a series of grooves or raised markers that produce a noise and vibration when the tires of a vehicle comes into contact with them. Rumble strips are intended to act as a warning system for cars that stray out of their lanes.

According to a new study from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), rumble strips have been significantly effective at reducing accidents on public roads. In fact, MDOT officials noted that when rumble strips are present, they can cut traffic fatalities in half.

Officials credit the reduction in roadway fatalities to the effectiveness of rumble strips, which can alert drivers to get back in their lane and pay attention. Whether they are dozing off, using a cell phone, or engaging in other forms of distraction, the alert can be lifesaving.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has been adding rumble strips to roads and highways across the state. Their latest efforts include plans to install the strips on State Highway 361 after a Corpus Christi Police Chief was killed in a traffic accident by a tired driver who briefly crossed the center divider.

Rumble strips may help reduce the risks of auto accidents, but they never eliminate them entirely. This is especially true when motorists drive distracted or otherwise act negligently when behind the wheel.
