Why You Should Not Take Food Poisoning Lightly

Why You Should Not Take Food Poisoning Lightly

Every single one of us can expect to come down with food poisoning at one point in our lives. It is only inevitable. It is a thought that should not surprise many. We all want to believe that the food we consume is safe to eat and free of bacteria and other harmful elements that can cause serious food illness.

In light of the recent listeria outbreak from ice cream manufactured by Blue Bell Creameries, who recalled all of their ice cream products that were believed to contain Listeria moncytogenes. At least three in Texas were affected. This bacteria can lead to the illness, listeriosis, a type of food poisoning that can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness.

How did listeria get into our food?

Listeria has been found in the soil and water. If an animal consumes water containing listeria, and the manure is used for fertilizer, not only is the animal affected, but the soil can become contaminated as well. Vegetables grown in contaminated soil can be affected with listeria.

Those are placed at higher risk of complications from listeria may include:

  • Pregnant women
  • Diabetics
  • Alcoholics
  • Cancer patients
  • Those with a weakened immune system, e.g. living with HIV/AIDS
  • Those suffering from liver disease
  • The elderly

Listeriosis is not unlike many of the other types of food poisoning, such as E. coli, salmonella, or botulism. Many of these bacteria produce similar side effects that can wreak havoc on your body. If you or a loved one suffered from food poisoning, do not brush it off! Remember that food poisoning is a very serious illness that can have potentially life-threatening effects.
